Reading one thing at a time
It is easy to keep several books open. A page marked in one, a paragraph highlighted in another, a tab waiting for a later that does not arrive. The stack looks like appetite. It often behaves like delay.
Reading one thing at a time is a small refusal. The other titles stay on the shelf. They are not rejected. They are next. The current book gets a full sitting: a beginning, a middle, and a place to stop that is chosen rather than interrupted.
The mind likes this more than it admits. A single argument can be followed. A single voice can be heard. When the book ends, there is a clear space in which to choose the next one, instead of a fog of half-begun sentences.
This is not a rule for every week. It is a useful default. One chair. One book. Then another.
